Backyard chicken owners know that fresh eggs often sell themselves. Especially when you have those blues and greens from Easter Egger layers and those deep chocolate brown eggs from Black Copper Marans. The reason for this though, is that those eggs STAND OUT.
What else will make your eggs stand out? Well, your egg cartons of course.
When you’re at a busy farmers market surrounded by other vendors, presentation of your eggs and egg cartons can make all the difference. Your egg cartons are more than just packaging for safe transportation; they are a branding opportunity designed to set your eggs apart and help you sell more consistently.
Over the years of raising chickens, gardening, and selling our eggs, flowers and honey, I’ve learned that small creative touches can go a long way in turning first-time buyers into repeat customers, as well as attracting new first time buyers!
Below are creative, practical, and research-backed ideas to make your eggs and egg cartons stand out while staying compliant with farmers market rules.
Choosing the Right Egg Cartons
Cardboard Egg Cartons vs. Clear or Brown Egg Cartons
Many backyard farmers opt for white egg cartons because they’re classic, affordable and easy to stamp or label. Brown cartons, on the other hand, give off a rustic, recycled feel, which is exactly what your farmers market shoppers want, often without realizing it!
Choosing the right look should match your brand and the image you want to project at your booth, and so going with any carboard egg carton rather than plastic will win your audience over (as well as save you money).
Buying Egg Cartons in Bulk
Egg cartons in bulk can save you money and ensure consistency in your presentation. This is what we always do to a) keep the price as low as possible for us, and b) to always have egg cartons in stock (nothing is more frustrating than running out and your selling is backordered and can't get your order right away).
Bulk egg carton pricing allows you to calculate the cost per carton and factor it into your egg price more accurately.
Branding Your Egg Cartons
This is the ABSOLUTE BEST way to stand out at any market, and if your egg cartons are really aesthetically pleasing, that encourages your shoppers to take photos of your booth as well and share, which can be an added bonus at any market.
How to brand your egg cartons so they stand out??
1. Egg Carton Stamps
This is my number 1 recommended way to stand out at a farmers market- by decorating what people see as they walk buy. Beyond stamping the eggs themselves, an egg carton stamp on the lid is a great option.
A custom egg carton stamp featuring your farm name, a hen image, or even a fun tagline can turn plain cartons into memorable packaging and branding.
2. Egg Stamps
A simple egg stamp with food-safe ink is an affordable way to brand your eggs directly. You can stamp the egg with your farm name or logo, and customers will see your mark every time they open the carton. Custom egg stamps can give your little eggs a unique look.
3. Unique Colored Egg Cartons
Everyone is used to the standard, long, rectangular 12 egg carton. So stand out! Find those red or pink egg cartons! The more you can stand out with a product that people see on a day to day basis at the grocery store will really grab their attention!
Standing Out at the Farmers Market
Here are some more marketing suggestions for selling eggs at any market:
1. Adding Recipes and Tips
Including a small recipe card inside the carton (think: quiche, custard, or frittata) adds value for your customer. It shows that you not only sell eggs but also care about how they are enjoyed.
2. Eco-Friendly and Recycled Cartons
Many customers are environmentally conscious and appreciate efforts to recycle and reduce waste. You can advertise a carton return system where customers bring back cartons for a small discount on their next purchase. This not only reduces your carton costs but also builds customer loyalty.
3. Labeling for Transparency
Adding information about how your eggs will benefit a customer will connect them more to you as a egg seller and your personal farm practices. Adding words such as “pasture-raised”, and even transportation details (for example, “collected daily, sold within 24 hours”) can build trust.
Research has shown that consumer confidence increases when farmers provide clear product information. Check out this study on consumer trust in food from the National Library of Medicine, which goes on to say that "Although some food attributes are visible, many of the attributes that consumers seek and are willing to pay a price premium for are not".
Best Egg Cartons for Selling Eggs
Here are some of our top choices for egg cartons that stand out:
1. Egg Cartons in Bulk (MY PERSONAL TOP CHOICE)
I highly recommend these cartons for several reasons:
- You can order up to 200 bulk egg cartons here, which will bring your price down by about half the price of a regular order.
- If you are selling 10 dozen eggs per week, ordering a pack of 200 will last you around 5 months.
- You can get these egg cartons in a pack of 25, 50, 100, 150 or 200.
- The shape is unique which will also allow you to stand out at a farmers market.
- The top of these egg cartons is flat allowing for a custom egg carton stamp.
These are my top choice for egg cartons in terms of price/value, unique shape and how they allow me to stamp the top with whatever stamps I would like for surface area and no holes.
2. White Egg Cartons with Stamp Area on the Top
These cartons are your best bet if you want to make a custom stamp for the lid. And what I love about these ones is that the entire top is stampable- so you can get several different stamps according to what you are selling (ie: a custom stamp for your farm name, a cute hen stamp and a stamp telling about your eggs, such as "from our free range backyard chickens" or "collected by Suzie" or any other custom details!)
These farm egg cartons are made from biodegradable paper, and they can be reused for storing eggs of different sizes, from chickens, ducks, or quail.
3. Colored Egg Cartons
Check these ones out as example
These egg cartons are unique in that they are cardboard that have been colored.
The typical colors of colored egg cartons are
- blue
- pink
- yellow
I haven't seen too many variations of colors for egg cartons, but I also haven't seen very many colored egg cartons at many farmers markets either, so these would be another way to stand out.
If you are going to go for the colorful egg carton route, I would suggest getting all three colors. If you buy, for example, all blue cartons, that will just look like your regular egg carton- unless you have a whole blue theme going built around this for the look of your farm stand.
If you want to customize these cartons with a stamp, you will have to get a smaller, more rectangular stamp, unless you find colored egg cartons with a flat top.
Here is the only colored egg cartons I know of with the flat surface for a larger stamp:

Custom Stamps
1. Rectangular, Flat Top Egg Carton Custom Stamp
This is a nice stamp where you can customize the name of your farm in text, and below it will say "from our coop to your table.
This will add a nice touch and you can get it right on Amazon.
See the other carton stamping options here.
2. Custom Egg Carton Stamps
If you really want to customize your egg carton stamp, then I highly recommend looking for handmade stamp sellers.
For a super amazing price, you can upload a custom image, logo or just customize your text on images that are already out there and have some super cute stamps for your egg cartons.
Plus, get them in any shape, any size for any egg carton, or individual egg!
3. Egg Carton Stickers
If stamps are not your thing, you could always go with egg carton stickers. There are many to choose from on Amazon!
